About NZNKHRIA
A New Zealand organisation with a focused human-rights mission
NZNKHRIA publicly launched on 14 July 2024 and was incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 on 8 May 2025. Its documented work combines public education, advocacy, testimony and community connection.

Why the association was established
For years, people in New Zealand supported North Korean defectors and human-rights work through separate community initiatives. In 2024, organisers with practical experience concluded that this work needed a durable public platform: one able to coordinate education, regular programmes, community support and international cooperation.
Planning began on 20 February 2024, followed by a formation meeting on 2 July. The association publicly launched on 14 July 2024, the first North Korean Defectors’ Day, and became an incorporated charitable trust on 8 May 2025.
Our documented purposes
- Improve accurate public understanding of North Korean human rights in Korean and wider New Zealand communities.
- Hold regular forums, seminars and educational programmes.
- Support the agency, settlement and community connection of North Korean defectors in New Zealand.
- Cooperate with New Zealand and international human-rights organisations and institutions.
- Build practical, respectful support for North Korean people and families.
NZNKHRIA presents itself as a nonpartisan human-rights organisation. Public communication should remain factual, constructive and centred on human dignity.

Respectful opportunities for people with lived experience to speak with context, consent and dignity.
Community connection
Gatherings and practical support that strengthen belonging among North Korean and wider New Zealand communities.
